Coming Up on Ten Years –
Where we started –
In early 2015, Chad Grubb, who grew up in Chippewa-on-the-Lake, was inspired to create a book of memories celebrating the history of Chippewa Lake Park. His vision quickly grew into something more. What began as a passion project soon turned into meetings at 26 Bungalow Bay, with Amber Dalakas and Sharon Sefl Karhan, which led to the founding of the Chippewa Lake Ohio Historical Society.
Before long, we were joined by Cyndy Naragon, Gayle Foster and Kathy Schmitz. The group worked diligently to draft the bylaws, and Cyndy played a key role in managing the state filing and official incorporation.
After Chad’s passing in 2016, Gayle stepped in as President. As the years went by, we continued to grow steadily.
Today –
In 2024, the historical society signed a lease agreement with the Medina County Park District for the house located at 7464 Lake Road. We are very grateful to the Park District for embracing our vision and forming this partnership. Their investment in this project and our community means a great deal to us and we are thankful for this amazing opportunity.
Our mission is to preserve the history of the Chippewa Lake area — including the present-day Villages of Chippewa Lake and Gloria Glens, the Townships of Lafayette and Westfield, and the former Villages of Briarwood Beach and Chippewa-on-the-Lake.
We are dedicated to honoring the stories of the earliest settlers through to today’s residents, and documenting the people, places, and traditions that have shaped this unique area. This includes the legacy of local businesses such as the ice houses, Chippewa Meats, and Leohr’s dealership, as well as the many taverns, pubs, and hotels — from the notorious Tarry Tavern to countless others.
Chippewa Lake Park lies at the heart of our community’s history. Its vibrant past continues to inspire memories and curiosity. We strive to preserve the events, activities, and customs that have defined life here for generations and to ensure that the spirit and heritage of Chippewa Lake endures for future generations.
